"Night Falls Fast:
Understanding
Suicide"

By Kay Redfield Jamison
Knopf: $26.

A professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University, Jamison first gained public attention with her
book, "An Unquiet Mind," a
memoir about her struggle with
manic depression. In "Night Falls Fast," Jamison argues that suicide
is more common than people
realize, and that it is most often associated with severe mental
illness. She believes that most
suicides are impulsive acts, that suicides can be prevented, and
that too little is being done to
address the issue. Recently, Dr. Jamison spoke to a rapt
audience in Charlottesville and described her own near-fatal
suicide attempt. After she
recovered, she resolved to stay
on her medications, and since then she has functioned very well. Her book is a serious study of suicide, with excellent suggestions for
families and professionals.

"The Anti-Depressant
Survival Program"
(Robert J. Hedaya)
(From the AMI-No. Virginia
newsletter)
Crown Publishing Group; $24.

Up to 80 percent of anti-depressant users suffer major side effects that leave them significantly impaired in their abilities to function in their jobs or personal relationships. Dr.
Hedaya has created a complete program that has helped his patients overcome side effects and enhances the benefits of anti-depressant drugs.

New and in our library:

"I Am Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help" (Xavier Amador, PhD.)

A must-read for families trying to cope with a loved one who has a mental illness, but refuses treatment.
